Social Links Wordpress Plugin

The Social Links Wordpress plugin is a sidebar widget that displays icon links to your profile pages on other social networking sites. You can see it in action here on the right hand side of my blog.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Download the installation zip file and unzip leaving the directory structure in tact.
  2. Upload the newly unzipped ’social-links’ folder to the `/wp-content/plugins/` folder folder
  3. Activate the Social Links plugin from the wordpress plugins activation page.
  4. Add the widget to your sidebar from the Widget design page.
  5. Add your social links from the Social Links page under Management.

Update: I’m currently in the process of updating the plugin for Wordpress 2.9. No end date in mind yet, but I’ve got all the functionality already in place. Just cleaning up the UI a bit and refactoring the code.

Upcoming Features:

  1. Ability to select any icon from an icons folder and enter any title and url to go with it. Manage available networks on your own! . Just upload the icon and its available to select.
  2. Open in new window(already done)

Known Issues:

  1. Long links are truncated.

    Kareem,

I have a fan site on facebook that I am trying to link, and it’s cutting off the last 4 or 5 numbers. Any suggestions? After facbook.com/ there are 36 characters. Thanks for any help.

I’ve had the same problem with the plugin conflicting with Alex King’s Popularity Contest plugin — aka the Featured Content area. Any ideas how to fix?

    Hi,

I installed your plugin and the Heading visible on my page, but I don’t find the settings dialog under management, what do I make wrong. I’m using WP2.8.1

You should add deviantart.com too.. :)

  9. Derek says:

This is really nice, but I can’t seem to figure out why the icons always roll over into multiple rows. I’d like to have just a single row of icons across my sidebar but, despite adding a #socialLinksContainer { width: 175px; }, it remains the same size….

    Thoughts?

  10. allan fried says:

I installed Social Links. Been having a hard time getting the icon images to appear. I tried both the auto install and downloading the zip and doing it manually.

Firefox 2 of them show ok. The Linked In icon shows as a text link to my feed. When I set it up on the back end, the Linked In icon shows though.

In Explorer and Chrome it shows as a broken image link, however the url links to feedburner as well.

    Any fix?

  11. allan says:

Thought I had posted, but guess it didn’t take.
I downloaded this and the Linked In Icon doesn’t show, and actually links to my feed rather than my linked in page. Attempted this a few time, uninstalled/reinstalled, etc.

    Any fixes?

Hi, I love your addon, just wondering if you plan to have an “open this in a new window” option in your widget options.

If not, can you let me know how I can add a hack to do this as I don’t really want people to navigate away from my page and get stuck into Facebook :p

There are still problems with the newer version, too. I’m having the same issues that everyone mentioned above. Management page? Social Networking Links? Where are these?

Now I have to uninstall and find another plugin for this.

Kareem’s last post was in June, I’m assuming he’s let us fend for ourselves, LOL!

I like your plugin a lot. Have used it on several WordPress blogs I administer.

Just wanted to give you a head’s up that it appears to have a conflict in 2.9 with the new image editor function in core — that is, the plugin breaks the new feature. Please let me know if you’re able to get it to work with the new version of WP.
