Social Links WordPress Plugin

The Social Links WordPress plugin is a sidebar widget that displays icon links to your profile pages on other social networking sites. You can see it in action here on the right hand side of my blog.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Download the installation zip file and unzip leaving the directory structure in tact.
  2. Upload the newly unzipped ‘social-links’ folder to the `/wp-content/plugins/` folder folder
  3. Activate the Social Links plugin from the wordpress plugins activation page.
  4. Add the widget to your sidebar from the Widget design page.
  5. Add your social links from the Social Links page under Management.

Update: I’m currently in the process of updating the plugin for WordPress 2.9. No end date in mind yet, but I’ve got all the functionality already in place. Just cleaning up the UI a bit and refactoring the code.

Upcoming Features:

  1. Ability to select any icon from an icons folder and enter any title and url to go with it. Manage available networks on your own! . Just upload the icon and its available to select.
  2. Open in new window(already done)

Known Issues:

  1. Long links are truncated.

@Sharon. Its definitely the next thing I’m doing in the plugin. I started it a few weeks ago, but for the next little while I won’t be able to spend on time on it. I hope to get it out in within the next month, but don’t hold me to it. :)
    Thanks for the feedback!

    Update:

The next version is almost ready. I’m already done coding it. There have been some changes under the hood so I’m spending some time just testing to make sure everyone can transition smoothly from the last version.

This next version will allow you to link to any site you want. All you’ll have to do is upload the site icon to an ‘icons’ folder and it will automagically appear for you to select in the admin page.

Hopefully I can have this out by next weekend.
    Cheers

Hey I have this plugin and I love it and all but the images don’t show for me! :( I’m guessing its because I have the new WordPress but can anyone help me make it work?

  5. kareem says:

@Charlii Do they show up in the admin page? If not, double check there’s an images folder in the social-links plugin folder and let me know.

  6. Drew McManus says:

Ed, which database are you referring to when you wrote:

    “Drew,
go into the database and up the max characters for the url field.”

I attempted to look at the plug-in’s php file but found nothing referring to max characters. Thanks.

  7. kareem says:

    @Drew.
I suggest holding out until the next release. It takes care of this and much more.

If you’re interested in trying it out now, I’ve got a pretty stable release here. If you(or anyone else) want to try this sneak peak version, please leave a comment with any feedback or bugs you find.

  8. Drew McManus says:

Thanks, some quick input on the beta version:

    1) the migrate feature didn’t work, even after deactivate/reactive
    2) the input method is very counter-intuitive. Just looking at the setup screen makes me think all you need to do is double click the social networking icon and it should automatically fill out the “icon friendly name” field but this wasn’t the case. I had to drag the icon to the field to make it work
    3) none of the icons would load after clicking the “add social link” button so it is hard to offer any feedback beyond that.

It seems that I’ve lost all of my 1.0.1 version info which is too bad, I hope you get the new version up and running soon.

  9. kareem says:

    Hi Drew,

You definitely haven’t lost your links from the previous version. They’re still sitting there in the database.
It sounds to me like the database update wasn’t successful.

    1. Do you get an error message when you try to add a new link?
    2. Do you have a way to look at your wordpress database?

  10. Drew McManus says:

No error message, it just hang sup with the “wait” graphic.

Yes, but I eventually just made a sidebar widget myself out of a text widget which seems to do the trick just fine so I doubt I’ll even use the plugin, but I’m sure plenty of other folks will appreciate it since they won’t wnat to take the time to code it out via html.

    Drew

  11. Brian says:

Kareem, thanks for the plugin, very useful.

    One thing:
    * The tag for each icon only has the “alt” attribute set. This means tooltips don’t show up in Firefox since Firefox uses the “title” attribute for tooltips (IE will use “alt” for tooltips if “title” is missing). It’s best to set both the “alt” (for accessibility) and the “title” attributes in the tag.

  27. Susan Patton says:

Hi, The Facebook profile URL is chopping off the last digit so the link results in a address not found error.

Our correct URL is http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrews-McMeel/1619016642 and Social Links uses http://www.facebook.com/people/Andrews-McMeel/161901664 chopping off the last digit.

    Hoping this can be resolved.

    Thanks,

    susan

I have installed and added the social links plugin successfully. The problem I am having is when adding a Facebook link the entire URL to our profile its gets truncated. You can see the result here http://esucp.com/blog/ but the Face book profile path should be http://www.facebook.com/pages/Easter-Seals-UCP-North-Carolina/62512907792?ref=ts
